Weather in Vietnam

The weather in Vietnam depends on the climate zone of the area you are traveling to.

Vietnam is a long country with a north-to-south distance of more than 1,650 kilometers.

Therefore, the country has even three climate zones.

The Northern part of Vietnam (which included Hanoi) mainly consists of highlands and the Red River plain. The area has four seasons:

  • pleasant spring between March and May
  • hot summer between June and August
  • pleasant autumn between September and November
  • cool winter between December and February. In winter the weather drops to 14°C in Hanoi and it can even snow in the mountains.

The Southern part of the country (which includes Ho Chi Minh City) is mostly covered by coastal lowlands. The area has three seasons:

  • rainy season between June and November
  • dry season between December and February
  • hot season between March and May.

The Central Vietnam is mostly covered by highlands and forests and faces three main seasons:

  • strong winds and rains during the northeast monsoon between September and February
  • hot and dry summers between May and September
  • a transitional season between March and May, which boasts mostly clear skies and a low humidity level.

Weather in Hanoi by month

April is the second month of spring in Hanoi. The weather is warm but often windy. Along with the increasing daily temperatures humidity level and the number of rainy days also increase in April.

May is the last month of spring in Hanoi when daily temperatures and humidity level increase significantly. Heavy but typically short showers can occur several times a day.

June is the first month of the rainy summer and is one of the hottest months in Hanoi. The average day temperature is 32 °C, humidity level is high. Heavy rains are frequent but short.

July is the hottest month in Hanoi when daily temperatures can rise above 35°C. Humidity level stays very high and only heavy rains bring some relief from the heat. Because of the high temperatures Hanoi is very quite in July during the daytime.

August is the wettest month of the year in Hanoi with high humidity level and a lot of rainfall. The average temperature is starting to decrease however it is still very hot. A light breeze makes it feel a bit better.

September is the end of long and rainy summer in Hanoi. Humidity level starts to decrease and sunlight becomes more soft. A light breeze makes the weather cooler and more comfortable.

October marks the beginning of autumn in Hanoi. Daily temperatures stay above 25°C, humidity level and the amount of rainfall decrease, a light wind makes it feel cooler. The weather is pleasant and mild.

November is the last month of the rainy season. The weather is mostly pleasant with less rain and lower humidity level comparing to the previous months. The average daily temperature is around 25°C.

December is one of the coldest months of the year. The days become shorter, the amount of sunshine decreases and daily temperatures drop to 18°C.

January is the coldest month in Hanoi. Daily temperatures are around 15°C and humidity stays at 70% making the weather feel more chilling. The wind is often strong and cold. January is often cloudy and sees less sunshine than other months.

February is a bit warmer than January however the weather is still cold, sometimes rainy and often misty in the mornings. Humidity level is about 70%.

March is very mild and pleasant in Hanoi. It is the first month of spring. March sees more sun, higher daily temperatures and less rain. Humidity stays the same as in February.

Weather in Ho Chi Minh City by month

April is the hottest month of the year. Both day and night temperatures are high, humidity level is increasing and the rainfall amount rises.

May is the first month of the wet season in Ho Chi Minh City. It is the second hottest month of the year, with high temperatures, high humidity level (about 80%) and occasional intense rains. It is very rare to rain all day, May still has a lot of sunshine.

June is the second month of the wet season. The weather is very hot and humid with high temperatures during the day and frequent intense rains. It is very rare to rain all day. It is cloudy only about 60% of daylight, meaning that the month still offers enough of sunshine.

July is the wettest month in Ho Chi Minh City. Frequent and heavy rains reduce high temperatures a bit. The rains never last all day and are always followed by sunshine. Humidity level is still high very high.

August is hot, humid and rainy. The weather remains similar to June and July. Frequent, heavy but never prolonged rains reduce the temperature and refresh the city.

September sees the highest humidity level (85%). It has very high temperatures and a lot of rainy days. However rains are not prolonged and typically there are several hours of sunshine every day.

October is still humid and hot with very frequent but mostly short rains. Day temperatures feel even higher because of the high humidity level.

November is the last month of the rainy season in Ho Chi Minh City. It sees less rains and offers cooler nights that October. It is still hot during the days however a lower humidity level makes it feel cooler.

December is the first month of the dry season. The weather is warm, sunny and mostly clear. The lower humidity and a smaller amount of rainfall makes December a great month to visit Ho Chi Minh City.

January and February belong to the dry season in Ho Chi Minh City. Both months experience perfect weather. Daily temperatures are high, humidity level is comfortable, the number of rainy days is low and the skies are mostly clear.

March is bit warmer than February. The weather is mostly clear and sunny with some occasional rains which are typically short and bring some relief from the heat.
